Definition

Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®) is a body-based therapeutic technique consisting of seven simple exercises that activate a natural tremoring response in the nervous system. Developed by Dr David Berceli, PhD, the tremors release chronic muscular tension and stress patterns held in the body, using the same biological mechanism animals use after a threatening experience, allowing the nervous system to return to a state of calm and balance.

What is TRE?

Your body already knows how to heal.

Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®) are a series of simple movements designed to evoke a natural tremoring response in the body. These tremors are the nervous system's own mechanism for releasing deep muscular tension, the same process observed in animals after a threatening experience.

Developed by Dr David Berceli and used by millions globally, TRE® is a safe, accessible, and evidence-informed self-help tool that works alongside therapy, or as a stand-alone practice.

No prior experience or specific level of fitness is needed. Sessions are available in-person in Durbanville, Cape Town, and online from anywhere in South Africa.

Questions & Answers

TRE® Questions Answered

What is TRE® (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises)?

TRE® is a series of simple body-based exercises designed to activate a natural tremoring response in the nervous system. These tremors release deep muscular tension and stress, using the same mechanism animals use after a threatening experience. It was developed by Dr David Berceli and is used by millions of people worldwide.

Is TRE® the same as therapy?

TRE® is a body-based self-help tool, not talk therapy. It works alongside counselling or other therapeutic modalities, or as a stand-alone practice. Shareé is a TRE® Certified Provider who guides you safely through the exercises.

Is TRE® suitable for everyone?

TRE® is gentle and accessible. No prior experience or specific fitness level is required. It is not recommended for those in the acute phase of trauma without concurrent therapeutic support. Shareé will discuss your history before your first session to ensure it is appropriate for you.

How many TRE® sessions will I need?

Most people experience noticeable benefits within 3–6 sessions. Once you have learned the exercises safely, you can practise TRE® independently at home. The number of sessions varies depending on your goals and experience of the process.

Can I do TRE® online?

Yes. TRE® sessions are available online via Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams. Online sessions are equally effective and allow clients anywhere in South Africa to access TRE® with a certified provider.

What does a TRE® session feel like?

You perform a series of simple stretches that gently fatigue the leg muscles, activating a natural tremoring response. The tremors typically start in the legs and can spread through the body. Most people find the experience pleasant and deeply relaxing. The session concludes with a rest period to allow the nervous system to integrate.
